The Most Common Garage Door Issues

Many people have this assumption that a garage door is just about security when, in fact, it is also about offering you privacy and an easy exit from the property. Not to mention vehicle protection. However, all of that can be compromised with any number of common garage door issues.

In this article, we’ll look at a few garage door issues which if you encounter, is a clear sign that the garage door needs your attention. However, you can try troubleshooting the problem for yourself to save some money.

Opener is Unresponsive

You will rightly be frustrated if the opener isn’t responding to your commands. It happens to be a very common issue and fixing it could be simple. All you may need is to lubricate the chain of the garage door which will reduce friction and help to lift the door. Make sure you only use a silicone-based lubricant.

A Noisy Door

Grinding, squeaking and other noises may sound dangerous, but they are comparatively simple to fix. If you hear any of these noises, it is a clear indication that lubrication is needed. Find the noisy section of the door and lube it up. If this does not work, then you’ll want to hire a garage door service to find and fix the problem.

Door Closes Without the Command

If you notice that the garage door opens and then closes without you pushing any buttons, then almost always, it is a torsion spring issue. It is one of those garage door issues which you shouldn’t try to fix on your own. Torsion spring replacement is difficult and dangerous which is why it is best left to the professionals. However, not replacing the spring in time can cause it to break which renders the door useless.

The Door Opens Itself

Now, this might sound spooky, but we assure you that it is a problem with the garage door’s photo eye or any one of the sensors at the bottom of the door. The sensors could be dirty and you could try cleaning them. Worse they could be broken in which case cleaning will not work, but they can be replaced by a professional. If the device has a green light flashing, then it means the safety feature is working. Measure each sensor from the floor to the eye, and also from the wall to the eye. All measurements should be exact for the garage door issue to be resolved.

Garage Door Does Not Fully Close

If the garage door does not close fully or all the way, pipe insulation may be needed to secure the area. That said, if the garage door won’t release right towards the bottom, then you might have something that interferes with the door’s closing system. Either way, this isn’t something you can fix and will require the assistance of a professional garage door technician.
